Each orientation, I ask the attending students what their top training priorities are. Loose leash walking and reliable recall are without fail the most popular answers.
Responding to my clients’ needs and concerns, I am developing mini-courses just for each of these behaviors which will be launching at our Endicott facility in August. Mini-courses are great for the dog that already has good manners at home but needs work on loose leash walking and/or recall specifically.
The price for each mini-course will be $75 and includes an orientation, a clicker and a treat bag, and four, one-hour long classes. Does your dog need to learn both loose leash walking and a reliable recall? Take both classes for a discounted rate of $125!
If you are interested in signing up for one of these classes, please contact minicourses@rewardingbehaviors.com for more information. I’m sure the classes will fill quickly, so reserve your spot today!

Winniethecorgi learns the ring toss!. Just when I thought she couldn’t get any more fabulous, Winniw wows us yet again! You can view her video here.
Barkley Orville learns to freeze! Too cute with all those treats on his nose, I love this! View the video here.
Hamtaroplanet created an amazing home made agility set for her hamster and taught him to run it. Sophia’s youtube video has received almost 100,000 views, have you seen it?
DancingCavy, future freestyle champion, submitted a video on training “go to place.” This is one of the foundation behaviors at Clicking with Canines and I think it’s such an important behavior for all dogs to learn, her training plan and video are posted here.
At Clicking with Canines, targeting is viewed as a foundation skill because it is useful in teaching so many behaviors. One of the many wonderful applications of targeting is the doors it opens to a trainer wanting to do distance work on behaviors. DiscdogShayne’s entry this month focuses on just that topic. Here is her video, showing how to target train: Go to your mark, Scoot from a distance, Spin and other at a distance, Down at a distance (w/ no voice command), Sit at a distance to a stand (with hand and voice), Down on recall, and finally down at heel.
Who’s your favorite? Make sure you vote today!

Zigana was our winner! Anna trained her duckling Tuesday to spin around in a circle, using a clicker to shape the behavior.
Here is a link to the winning entry!
I’d like to congratulate Anna on winning May’s contest, and also for getting hired by Canine Partners, a UK service dog training organization, and on her graduation from university! Click/treat, Anna!

ABOUT DEBBIE JACOBS:
Debbie Jacobs lives in southern Vermont with her husband and 4 dogs. Sunny her fearful dog is a survivor of a 477 dog hoarding site discovered after the hurricanes of 2005. Though Debbie had been involved in rescue and had trained her own dogs for years, when Sunny arrived to her home she began a crash course in working with a seriously damaged, fearful dog. In the 3.5 years since his arrival she has focused on learning about the most effective and humane ways of helping scared dogs learn new behaviors and responses to the things that scare them. She is the creator of the www.fearfuldogs.com website and her ebook “A Guide To Living & Working With A Fearful Dog” was a finalist in the 2008 Dog Writers of America Association’s annual competition.

About the new feature:
One of my favorite things about becoming a trainer are the opportunities I’ve had to network with with other talented positive reinforcement trainers (specializing in a variety of species), dedicated shelter workers, veterinary technicians and veterinarians, canine massage therapists, pet sitters, behaviorists, dog walkers, and nutritionists, among others! Through my KPA experience, dogster, RBDT, ClickerExpo, etc., I have had the opportunity to meet many such people. I know how much all of their collective wisdom has influenced and helped my development as a trainer, and some of them have been gracious enough to volunteer their time answering RBDT board members’ training questions.
I have decided to start featuring one of these friends each month (or as often as I can find volunteers!). Throughout the month, we will collect questions from the RB board members, and the featured trainer will then answer them in a Q & A type format; an electronic training advice column.
Check out the new forum here.
Are you a pet professional who would like to volunteer as a future pet expert? Please send me your bio today via petexperts@rewardingbehaviors.com.
Rewarding Behaviors Dog Training forum welcomes pet owners, pet professionals, and any other individuals interested in learning more about the application of positive reinforcement training (specifically clicker training). What are you waiting for? Create an account today and join the fun!

Another workshop four weekend passed, another group of wonderful clicker trainers join the KPA team.
Congratulations to Laura Donaldson, Jules Nye, Alyson Zimmerman, and Louis Mande (and all of your dogs). Thank you all for being such inspiring trainers, for the opportunity to learn from and with you and your dogs, and for your friendship. It was a pleasure to work with all of you, and I do not doubt each of you will see great success in your future training endeavors.
Best wishes, and congrats! Your hard work really showed in your teaching and training assessments!

How to Create a Reactive Human in Ten Minutes or Less!”
Thanks to Jules Nye (of www.sitstayandplay.com), Karen Pryor Academy student; and Alyson Zimmerman (www.thefosterdogchronicles.com), Karen Pryor Academy student, for volunteering to pose in the pictures! Granted, we are all better trainers than actresses, we had trouble not laughing long enough to get any good shots!

Thank you to the RBDT forumites for bringing to my attention the posting and viewing difficulties you’ve been having.
Lucky for all of us, I’m married to my web developer and don’t have to worry about giving him holiday pay. Jim’s at work fixing the problems right now.
